In most situations, the accent tréma (ë, ï, and ü) is indicating that the accented letter must be pronounced distinctly from the preceding vowel.

Examples:
Noël (Christmas)
héroïne (heroine)
ambigüe (ambiguous)

As with all of the accents in French, they are signals for prononciation. To be understood, it is important to pay attention to the accents and try to pronounce words correctly. The more you read, write, speak, and hear French, the easier it becomes … I promise.
