I have mentioned before that French is the perfect foreign language for me because about 30 percent of English comes from French. Another plus is that for the most part the French alphabet is the same as the English alphabet… of course there are the accents « é è ê ë » and the « œ », but at least I can recognize the letters, and learn to pronounce the sounds… I would be absolutely lost with Chinese.
Something that has dawned on me is that I will never be finished learning French… this is a good thing!! There will always be something new for me to learn. I like the consistency of verb conjugations, and at the same time I love the richness and complexity of the language.
I may not be Francophone, but I’m working on becoming the best Francophile that I know. I will always have an American accent, but I’m happy to say that I can have a real conversation with a native French speaker, and I am proud of that.
Looking back over the last 13 years, I ask myself, “Was it all worth it?” ABSOLUTELY!!!

J’ai déjà mentionné que le français est la langue étrangère idéale pour moi, car environ 30 % de l’anglais provient du français. Autre avantage : l’alphabet français est en grande partie le même que l’alphabet anglais… bien sûr, il y a les accents « é », « è », « ê », « ë » et « œ », mais au moins je peux reconnaître les lettres et apprendre à prononcer les sons… Je serais complètement perdue avec le chinois.
Je me suis rendu compte que je n’aurai jamais fini d’apprendre le français… et c’est tant mieux ! Il y aura toujours quelque chose de nouveau à découvrir. J’apprécie la conjugaison des verbes, et en même temps, j’adore la richesse et la complexité de la langue.
Je ne suis peut-être pas francophone, mais je m’efforce de devenir la meilleure francophile que je connaisse. J’aurai toujours un accent américain, mais je suis heureuse de pouvoir avoir une vraie conversation avec un francophone natif, et j’en suis fière.
En repensant à ces 13 dernières années, je me demande : « Est-ce que ça en valait la peine ? » ABSOLUMENT!!!
