When choosing day trip destinations from Paris by TGV, I knew that I wanted to see the Champagne wine region. I knew nothing about Reims which lies on the northern edge of the Champagne wine region and is about 1.5 hr from Paris by train. Click here for TGV tickets.
The Champagne wine region is famous for the production of champagne, the sparkling white wine that bears the region’s name. The stunning vineyards of this area produce the Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grape varieties, which are essential for producing the renowned Champagne wine. EU law and the laws of most countries reserve the term “champagne” exclusively for wines that come from this region.
For a little history, Reims was founded by the Gauls and became a major city in the Roman Empire. Later, the city played a prominent ceremonial role in French monarchical history as the traditional site of the coronation of the kings of France. Reims is often referred to in French as la cité des sacres (“the Coronation City”).

Plus tard, la ville a joué un rôle cérémoniel important dans l’histoire monarchique française, étant le lieu traditionnel du couronnement des rois de France. Reims est souvent appelée la « cité des sacres ».
