Des faux amis …

Pain, nm : bread.

The French word « pain » looks exacly like the English word “pain.” The problem is that the word “pain” has a different meaning in English than it does in French.

In English, “pain” can mean figuratively “a person or a pet that is annoying ,” but in general it is used to signify “physical discomfort” or “mental distress.”

In French, « pain » generally means “bread”… much more pleasant to think about!

Mon boulanger fait un pain excellent.
My baker makes excellent bread.

On ne peut pas faire de sandwich sans pain.

Après avoir mangé trop de pain, il a eu une douleur dans l’estomac.
