“Holidays are a factor of happiness”
The head of the Observatory of Society and Consumption analyzes the habits of the French during the summer and the rest of the year.
Ninety years after the introduction of paid holidays, to what extent have holidays become democratized?
Before paid holidays, holidays didn’t really exist. Not working meant either being sick or being unemployed. But there was no idea of time for oneself. Ninety years later, they have become central to a very large majority of French people. The attachment to the holidays and their effect on well-being are considerable. The gap in life satisfaction between someone who takes a vacation and someone who does not take one is equivalent to that between a senior manager and an unemployed person. In other words, in ninety years they have become not a symptom but a factor of happiness.
